26 of 50: UW Carbone Cancer Center

The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center in Madison is the state’s only comprehensive cancer center, the highest designation granted by the National Cancer Institute. The Center’s achievements in innovative treatments, laboratory and clinical research, and training and education make it a major force in the fight against cancer.

As impressive as all of that is, the UW Carbone Cancer Center becomes more than just a prestigious medical facility when you’re the one with cancer. Kim Lockwood, M3’s Carrier Relations Coordinator, knows this firsthand. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and treated at the Center. While there, Kim experienced the skill and dedication – as well as the compassion – of the amazing staff. In fact, during her treatment phase, Kim’s experience compelled her to find ways to support the Center, including organizing fundraising events like a golf outing and a Halloween party.

“The same year I was diagnosed with breast cancer, three of my friends also learned they had some form of cancer. All of them have since passed away. I can’t help but feel like there’s a reason I’m still here. That’s why I’m passionate about advocating for patients and finding ways to increase funds for research,” says Kim.

Continuing to Give Back Today

Kim has now been cancer-free for seven years, but her commitment to the UW Carbone Cancer Center’s mission continues. In addition to volunteering her time on several patient advocate committees, Kim participates in a variety of fundraising events for the center throughout the year. She’s also played an integral role in facilitating M3’s support of the center, both at the corporate sponsorship level and at the employee level. For example, fundraising events that M3 has been involved with in support of the Carbone Cancer Center include Andy North & Friends and Wine, Women & Shoes.

The UW Carbone Cancer Center is very fortunate to work with a local company that rallies around our cause. We know we can count on M3 for sponsorships and so much more. Their employees have spent many hours on planning events, and M3 has even let us use their beautiful space for board meetings.
