New FDA Software Helps With Food Safety Plan Creation

Food & Agribusiness, Property & Casualty

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a new software tool to help food manufacturers create a food safety plan. The software produces a facility-specific plan which meets the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Final Rule for Preventive Controls for Human Food.

The Food Safety Plan Builder is a free software application, developed by the FDA. Businesses can download the tool from the FDA’s website and it will guide them step by step through the creation of a food safety plan, as required by the FSMA. Within the application, the user is taken through a series of sections (tabs) that prompt for information specific to the business and facility. The completed file may be saved or printed, resulting in a food safety plan to use in daily operations and to provide when the FDA conducts an inspection. Manufacturers are not required to use this program to develop their facility’s food safety plan.

The program is modeled after the Food Defense Plan Builder, which was created to assist in developing customized food defense plans for facilities.
