Election Update: The Future of the Affordable Care Act

Compliance, Employee Benefits

On Tuesday, November 8th, the United States elected a new President.  The Republican nominee, Donald Trump, was elected President and Republicans control a majority in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.  As the dust settles, employers are asking what this means for the future of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Future changes

Since the ACA was signed into law in 2010, Republican officials have been attempting to repeal the law.  During the campaign, President-elect Trump campaigned on the idea of repealing and replacing the ACA.  With a Republican Congress, changes to the law are very likely.

At this time, it is too early to speculate what changes will be made to the Affordable Care Act.

Changes to the Affordable Care Act will not happen immediately.  The new President and Congress do not take office until January 20, 2017.  Even when new laws are passed, employers often have plenty of time to implement those changes before they are effective.
